Join MRG Foundation and Concordia University for the debut of the groundbreaking touring exhibit, Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy, Reframed and Exhibited. To celebrate the launch of the exhibit, we are hosting an opening reception on Jan. 13, 2017, 6-9 p.m. at Concordia University’s George R. White Library & Learning Center, 2800 NE Liberty St. in Portland, Ore. The reception is an opportunity to tour the exhibit, hear from its creators, and connect with social justice movement leaders from across Portland.

Giving Back illustrates Black philanthropic experiences and giving traditions, grounded in faith, mutuality, responsibility and social justice through luminous photographic prints on metal, iPad kiosks, video, and interactive digital apps featuring music, poetry, photography, narratives, and more. It comprises over a dozen vignettes and more than 50 black-and-white images that depict facets of giving across generations. Images and stories are from the book “Giving Back: A Tribute to Generations of African American Philanthropists” by author Valaida Fullwood and photographer Charles W. Thomas Jr.

This is just the first of many community events planned for the exhibit, which will be open through the end of March.

Since its inception, MRG has amplified the voices of those most affected by injustice and hosting this event will allow us to continue this work. As a leader in racial equity and social justice, we are well positioned to bring this exhibit, the conversations it inspires, and real change to the Pacific Northwest.

Concordia University Libraries’ Multicultural Art and Events program is dedicated to educating and inspiring students, faculty and the greater community by providing a variety of events intended to increase public awareness and access to art and culture.  All events are free and open to the public.

A special thanks to exhibitions partners: Collins Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, Moda Health, KBOO Community Radio, Oregonian Media Group and Spirit Mountain Community Foundation.
